Breathwork: Scientifically based breathing techniques in psychotherapy
What is breathwork?
Breathwork refers to a series of targeted breathing techniques used to promote relaxation, mental clarity and emotional regulation. In psychotherapy, breathwork is used specifically to:
- reduce stress and anxiety
- activate and regulate emotions
- activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest mode of the nervous system)
- strengthen concentration and mental resilience
Scientifically based techniques such as pranayama (the yogic breathing school), the conscious imitation of emotional breathing patterns and alternate nostril breathing have been proven to have positive effects on well-being.
Breathwork techniques
Here are some of the most commonly used and researched breathwork techniques briefly explained:
Pranayama – Targeted breath control from yoga practice
Pranayama includes various breathing techniques that are recognized in neuroscience as effective for regulating the nervous system:
- Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing): Reduces stress, improves focus and cognitive functions.
- Ujjayi breathing: Promotes calmness and emotional balance.
- Bhastrika (bellows breathing): Energizing, activates the sympathetic nervous system.
Physiological (cyclic) sighing – natural relaxation through double inhalation
Neuroscientific studies show that a double inhalation with a long exhalation stimulates the vagus nerve and reduces anxiety. This technique is used unconsciously in everyday life, but can be consciously trained.
Box breathing – Even breathing to calm the nervous system
This technique (e.g. inhale for 4 seconds – hold for 4 seconds – exhale for 4 seconds – hold for 4 seconds) is often used by athletes to maintain calm and focus.
Holotropic breathwork – Deep emotional processes through intensive breathing
This technique uses deep, connected breathing to expand consciousness. It is often used in non-therapeutic settings, but should only be practiced under professional guidance.
Benefits of breathwork for mental health
Breathwork offers numerous benefits, including:
- reduction of stress & anxiety through activation of the parasympathetic nervous system
- better emotional regulation through targeted breathing patterns
- improved sleep quality through calming breathing techniques
- greater resilience & mental strength through conscious breath control
