Meditation in Psychotherapy: A Sustainable Tool for Mental Health
What is meditation?
Meditation is not a relaxation technique – it is a powerful tool for emotional exposure and initiation of healing processes in modern psychotherapy. In the medium term and with regular use, it helps to reduce stress, promote emotional stability and sharpen self-awareness. Especially in combination with therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), meditation can make a lasting contribution to mental health and promote serenity.
How meditation complements psychotherapy
Various traditional forms of meditation like Anapana or Zen meditation, help to concentrate the mind and become aware of the „real nature of the mind“. In psychotherapy, meditation as a tool is used to:
- Strengthening emotional resilience: By consciously focusing on the moment, patients learn to better deal with challenging feelings.
- Relieve anxiety and depression: Studies show that mindfulness meditation can reduce depressive symptoms and prevent panic attacks.
- Reduce stress hormones: Regular meditation reduces the release of cortisol and helps the body to better deal with stress.
- Improve concentration: Meditation improves cognitive performance and helps to focus on what is important.
Mindfulness and presence: living in the here and now
Meditation teaches us to consciously perceive the here and now without judging. My patients learn to observe their breath, accept thoughts and emotions and not let them overwhelm them. This technique is used specifically to:
- Improve emotional regulation
- Reduce thought cycles
- Calming the nervous system
- Develop equanimity in the long term
Meditation as a method – not a relaxation exercise!
The original form of meditation is insight meditation (vipassana), which in preparation requires training in concentrating the mind on an object. In the so-called focus meditation (anapana), my patients learn:
- Consciously observing the breath without influencing it
- To perceive thoughts, memories, emotions and sensory stimuli without judgment
- Letting go and practicing acceptance
The reduction of suffering and physical tension is not the primary goal, but rather a natural side effect of a mindful mindset.
